Early Life and Military Service
Israel “DT” Del Toro Jr. grew up in Colorado and joined the United States Air Force in 1997. He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2005 as a Technical Sergeant and a combat controller.
Life-Changing Injury
On December 4th, 2005, while on a mission near Qalat, Afghanistan, Del Toro’s Humvee struck a concealed landmine, resulting in severe injuries including third-degree burns over 80% of his body and the loss of fingers on both hands.
A Promise Kept and a Road to Recovery
Despite the bleak prognosis and odds stacked against him, Del Toro made a promise to his young son that he wouldn’t leave him fatherless. This promise fueled his determined recovery, which included over 120 surgeries and extensive physical therapy.
Redefining Possibilities
Del Toro became a beacon of hope for wounded warriors, participating in cycling, track and field, and powerlifting events. He competed in the Invictus Games and achieved remarkable milestones, including his 131st parachute jump after 11 years and an unexpected promotion to Master Sergeant.
Recognition and Inspiring Others
His incredible perseverance earned him the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the 2017 ESPY Awards. Del Toro retired from the Air Force after a distinguished 20-year career and now travels as a motivational speaker, sharing his story of overcoming adversity.
