Roman De Peralta: The Island Spirit Behind Kolohe Kai
Early Days and Musical Influences
Born and raised on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, Roman De Peralta was immersed in Hawaiian culture. His family fostered a love for music, and his father was a musician himself. Growing up surrounded by the island’s rhythms, and influenced by diverse musical genres like Hawaiian music, reggae, R&B, and pop, Roman found his passion. He first sang for family and friends, progressing to school music classes where his teachers quickly recognized his natural talent.
The Birth of Kolohe Kai
The band Kolohe Kai, whose name playfully translates as “rascal-ocean,” was born out of a high school Polynesian music class in 2006. This group of students, including Roman, quickly evolved beyond classroom sessions to captivating local audiences at talent shows and gatherings. Soon, 17-year-old Roman had signed a record deal, followed by the rest of the band members.
Breakout Success and Musical Style
In 2009, their debut album This is the Life broke onto the music scene, garnering widespread acclaim. Hit singles like “Ehu Girl” and “Cool Down” established Kolohe Kai’s signature sound. This blends classic reggae beats, island-inspired melodies, and smooth vocals tinged with hints of R&B. Roman’s heartfelt lyrics capture the laid-back spirit of Hawaii while exploring themes of love, relationships, and island life.
